Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from her grandmother Denise. She was night nurses to afford her mother the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theater. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to engage people. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught her to say something through the arts. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the trash from one of the juries. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was given and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
